PCSH’s Hot Topic: HIPAA

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is the current buzz word. All Prime Care Services Hawaii, Inc.employees & business associates have to comply to the privacy act related to patients’ personal health information. The Federal Government has imposed jail term and financial penalties to employers and employees so. . . . . . .

We are taking this seriously. Take heed of the following tips to avoid penalties:

Do avoid discussing patients in public places or with other people not involved in the patient’s care
Do remember to log off Clinical Link after your documentation
Do keep your password private– not to be shared with anyone
Do leave patient information in the trunk of your car,and/ or in a secure area in your car and home
Do avoid leaving patient information on the answering machine
Do shred patient’s health information prior to discarding in the trash
Do be informed on HIPAA updates and attend all PCSH info sessions
Do read PCSH’s HIPAA Policy Manual & Privacy Statement.
Do ask Jim H, Privacy & Security Officer, if you have questions or comments about HIPAA
